"Patience and respect are fundamental features of healing"

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist helping high-conflict couples that are on the brink of separation due to infidelity, emotional volatility, and family conflict.

I also see individuals, teens, and families dissatisfied with their lives, particularly in their relationships and mental health.

People often enact the same types of conflicts over and over with their spouses and families, at work or in school. In our work together we name these patterns, install communication tactics that foster empathy and understanding, and systematically address issues to build a preferred future.

Marriage and family therapists are uniquely suited to addressing family, marital, and individual problems like anxiety, stress, and depression. Take a break from learning about me and learn about why you should consider an LMFT for individual therapy and couples counseling.

Patrick M. DeCarlo is an early adopter and believer in the power of technology to aid couples in their counseling journey with its convenience and affordability.

What is Patrick’s clinical experience?

While I am presently dedicated to treating clients in private practice, I have enjoyed varied clinical experiences over the years.

I began in the damp bone-chilling rain of Seattle, Washington, as a community organizer.  I went door-to-door, inviting myself into living rooms where I sat on thousands of couches asking neighbors what sorts of changes they wanted in their communities.

I learned the lesson of slow, comprehensive assessment, allowing people the opportunity to tell their story, as so often people’s voices in low-to-moderate income communities had been silenced.  I ran economic empowerment campaigns in Detroit, Orlando, and Miami Gardens at the height of The Great Recession.

I then continued to serve the community as a child advocate and head trainer for Women in Distress of Broward County, leading a team of twenty AmeriCorps members in delivering prevention and intervention programming for those impacted by teen dating violence, domestic violence, and sexual violence.

I also have extensive experience in treating substance abuse issues like alcoholism and drug abuse at the agency level. I began by serving the Seminole Tribe of Florida and then spent several years working at United Recovery Project where I was eventually promoted to the position of Clinical Director before entering private practice.

In my time working in the substance abuse field I had a niche for working with clients experiencing co-occurring disorders, particularly Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, and Anxiety and Depression disorders.

I am also honored to have offered pro bono services to military veterans through Mission United's Collaborative Divorce Project where I helped resolve coparenting disputes, formulated time-share agreements, and aided in the fair division of assets for divorcing couples. Free yourself from the pain of divorce and book with a Licensed divorce specialist today.

Patrick M. DeCarlo spent many years as an educator and community advocate prior to serving South Florida as a therapist for the last decade.

What is Patrick’s educational training?

I received my Master’s in Family Therapy at Nova Southeastern University.  I continued my education postgraduate school with coursework in EMDR, a trauma-informed integrative therapy model, and certification in hypnosis and mindfulness/meditation.

I am also an artist. I received a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Central Florida in English: Creative Writing with a focus in poetry and briefly pursued a Master of Fine Arts in Chicago, Illinois (yes, I’m an art school drop out). My writing has been featured in several poetry anthologies, literary journals, and magazines. I also have experience in music production, photography, and performance art.

Creativity and collaboration is a hallmark of my clinical approach and I am a good fit for artists looking to analyze themselves and their work or people struggling in their careers. I enjoy wearing the hat of career coach and can offer insight on how to get work seen, build a business, or secure more recognition in your workplace.

I have also spent much time in exploring religious faiths. While I am a Christian Counselor and devoted Catholic, I believe curiosity and openness enhances all interfaith dialogues. I am dedicated to learning about your faith and find enjoyment in exploring Buddhism, Taoism, indigenous shamanism, Judaism, and Islam. America Magazine published my work integrating mindfulness with a Christian prayer tradition.

Patrick M. DeCarlo is an eclectic therapist with a wide array of clinical tools at his disposal as a result of years of continuing education training and self-study.

What clinical models does Patrick utilize?

I describe myself as an eclectic therapist utilizing multiple therapy models. However, I am discriminating in the models I am partial to.

For instance, I am chiefly interested in Bowen Family Systems therapy and conceptualize many of my cases as a process by which clients gain insight and relief in examining how they manage anxiety in complex relational systems.

Narrative Therapy views people as separate from their problems and I very much embrace the sociopolitical underpinnings of the model as it is most concerned with social justice. My theory of healing always includes justice, feminism, and equality.

I often allude to Structural Family Therapy and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy in my treatment of families and as a career coach as they can create fast results for people in family crisis or who need inspiration in achieving their goals.

I am also knowledgeable about DBT therapy and have great respect for the work of Marsha Linehan in reframing the coversation around Borderline Personality Disorder.

I am an LGBTQIA+ affirming therapist who believes patience and respect are fundamental features of healing. I am proudly a Sex Worker allied, Sex-Positive, and Kink-allied clinician.

My license number is MT3587.
